Assessments: Cognitive/Learning and Emotional/Behavioural

Assessments for the clients of Karunia Counselling are done by Ken Boschman, a registered psychologist with over 30 years of experience in education and psychology.

Assessments can be valuable for students of all ages. When ability, learning style and areas of giftedness or difficulty are identified, learning environments can be modified to maximize the student's opportunity for success. The outcomes are transcribed into a report that will include recommendations for programming and remediation. The psychologists will schedule a final meeting to explain the report and answer questions.

Assessments can help parents and teachers understand the child’s strengths and areas of challenge. For a student that struggles in school, a learning assessment can guide teachers and parents to develop realistic expectations and appropriate interventions.

Cognitive/Learning Ability Assessment
The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate the client’s learning ability and style. The assessment consists of a selection of ability tests, a measure of the client’s adaptive behaviour and an interview with the client, and parents or teachers as appropriate.

Emotional/Behavioural Assessment
An emotional/behavioural report almost always includes a cognitive/learning assessment. In addition,   the psychologist will conduct a clinical interview with the student and administer some tests.

A Cognitive/Learning Assessment requires 10 hours while an Emotional/Behavioural Assessment (which includes a Cognitive/Learning Assessment) will take 12 hours.

Ken Boschman
Registered Psychologist

I am a Registered Psychologist with over thirty years of experience in education. I continue to conduct psycho-educational assessments for students whose parents and teachers are seeking best strategies for teaching and learning, or trying to make sense of other factors that seem to be getting in the way of maturation or appropriate behaviour.

Ken’s assessment reports are well-received by parents and well-respected across the professional disciplines that may be involved in helping children learn and mature.
